A student of Tatiana Liberova, Jeanna Metallidi, and Itzhak Perlman, he is a former prize winner at the Menuhin, Wieniawski, and Paganini International Violin Competitions
Soviet-born Swiss violin virtuoso Ilya Gringolts was born on this day in 1982.
He has performed with orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin.
As a violinist who frequently premieres contemporary music, Gringolts founded the I&I foundation with conductor Ilan Volkov in the summer of 2020 to grant new commissions to young composers.
Gringolls is also an active chamber musician and educator. He is the first violinist of the Gringolts Quartet and currently serves a Professorship at the Zurch Hochschulen für Musik. Earlier this year, he was also appointed to the Accademia Chigiana in Siena.
He plays on on the 1718 "ex-Prové" Stradivari.
