German violin virtuoso and composer Ferdinand David died on this day in 1873.
A student of Louis Spohr, he served as Concertmaster of the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig and held a prominent teaching position at the Leipziger Konservatorium.
He is remembered in history for having given the premiere performance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor Op. 64.
