2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 26 year old VC Young Artist Luke Hsu from the United States and 26 year old Benjamin Baker from New Zealand.

4th, 5th and 6th prizes were awarded to 23 year old Olga Stroubkova from the Czech Republic, 20 year old Sumina Studer from Switzerland and 24 year old Kunwha Lee from South Korea.

18 year old Emma Wernig from the United States was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 Cecil Aronowitz International Viola Competition – at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, in Birmingham, England.

The Scottish-based Maxwell Quartet was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 9th Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition, in Trondheim, Norway.

2nd prize was awarded to the Omer Quartet.

Joint 3rd prize was awarded to the Esmé Quartet and the Simply Quartet.

The Moscow-based fusion quartet ‘Russian Renaissance’ was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2017 M-Prize Chamber Music Competition – in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States.

The Argus Quartet was awarded the Senior Strings category prize.

The Astera String Quartet was awarded the top prize in the Junior Strings category.

17 year old Yiming Liu from China was awarded 1st prize in the Group C (17 to 23 Years Old) category at the 2017 2nd Zhuhai International Mozart Competition for Young Musicians – in Zhuhai, China.

17 year old American double bassist William McGregor was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 42nd Stulberg International String Competition – in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 16 year old violinist Qing Yu Chen and 17 year old violinist Karisa Chiu.

 

27 year old Daichi Nakamura from Japan was awarded 1st prize in the violin division at the 2017 Johannes Brahms International Music Competition – in Pörtschach, Austria.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 17 year old violinist Belle Ting from Canada and 20 year old violinist Eunche Kim from South Korea.

 

14 year old VC Rising Star Eunbin Lee from South Korea was awarded 1st prize in the viola division at the 2017 Johannes Brahms International Music Competition – in Pörtschach, Austria.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 20 year old violist VC Young Artist Ziyu Shen from China – and 18 year old violist Sao Soulez Lariviere from France.

 

41 year old Ariel Barnes from Canada was awarded 1st prize in the cello division at the 2017 Johannes Brahms International Music Competition – in Pörtschach, Austria.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 18 year old cellist Erica Piccotti from Italy and 25 year old cellist Jordan Costard from France.

 

30 year old Belgian double bassist Wies de Boeve was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 Bottesini International Double Bass Competition, in Crema, Italy.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Lorraine Campet from France and Dominik Wagner from Austria.

 

28 year old Russian cellist Rustem Khamidullin was awarded 1st prize at the 2nd 2017 Benyamin Sönmez International Cello Competition – in Fethiye, Turkey.

No 2nd prize was awarded at this year’s competition.

Joint-3rd prize was awarded to cellists Ülker Tümer from Turkey and Cansın Kara from Turkey.

 

Double bassist Aaron Olguin from the United States was awarded 1st Prize in the solo division of the 2017 International Society of Bassists Competition, in Ithaca, New York.

The 1st prize in the jazz division was awarded to bassist Luca Alemanno.

The 1st prize in the orchestral division was awarded to bassist Adam Attard.

In this year’s bass makers’ division, the ‘Audience Favourite’ prize was awarded to instrument and bow maker Arnold Schnitzer.

 

The New York-based Aizuri String Quartet was awarded 1st prize at the 9th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, in Japan.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to the Ulysses Quartet from the United States and the Viano String Quartet from the United States.

 

The Montreal-based Milton String Quartet was awarded the Grand Prize and Senior String Division Gold Medal at the 2017 44th Annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition – at the University of Notre Dame, in South Bend, Indiana, USA.

2nd and 3rd prizes in the Senior Division were awarded to VC Artists Notos Quartet and the Ivani Quartet.

1st Prize in the Junior Division was awarded to Quartet Bellezza.

 

21 year old American violinist Annelle K. Gregory was awarded the Senior 1st Prize at the 2017 20th Annual Sphinx Competition, in Detroit, USA.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 21 year old cellist Santiago Canon-Valencia and 18 year old cellist Gabriel Martins.

In the Junior Division, 1st prize was awarded to cellist Ifetayo Ali-Landing.

30 year old Hiroko Ninagawa from Japan was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 VII Yampolsky International Violin Competition, in Moscow, Russia.

2nd prize was awarded to 17 year old Agafiya Grigoreva from Russia.

Joint 3rd prizes were awarded to 25 year old Emily Sun from Australia, 25 year old Hayato Ishibashi from the United States, 24 year old Jia Yi Chen and 22 year old Anna Savkina from Russia.

1st prize in the 10-15 year old Junior Competition was awarded to 12 year old Pui Ying Wong from China.

 

23 year old Lorenz Chen from Taiwan-Germany was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 Henri Marteau International Violin Competition, in Hof, Germany.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 21 year old Yukino Nakamura from Japan and 24 year old Stephan Starikov from Russia.

 

27 year old Canadian violinist Yolanda Bruno was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 inaugural Isabel Overton Bader Canadian Violin Competition, in Ontario, Canada.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to violinists Katya Poplyansky and Lucy Wang.

 

25 year old Australian violinist Emily Sun was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 Bromsgrove International Music Competition, in Bromsgrove, United Kingdom.

 

26 year old Korean-American violinist Elly Suh was awarded 1st prize at the 17th 2017 Moroccan Philharmonic Orchestra International Music Competition, in Casablanca, Morocco.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 16 year old David Elias Moncado from Germany and 21 year old Mohamed Hiber from France.

 

10 year old Fiona Khuong-Huu from Japan was awarded 1st prize in the 10 years and under category at the 2017 Grumiaux International Violin Competition, in Brussels, Belgium.

Joint-2nd prize was awarded to 10 year old Laçin Akyol from Turkey, 10 year old Theodor Kaskiv from France and 9 year old Alexander Kulitskiy from Germany.

 

11 year old Ryota Nakamura from Japan and 10 year old Yunci Kaelyn Soh from Singapore were awarded joint-1st prize in the 13 years and under category at the 2017 Grumiaux International Violin Competition, in Brussels, Belgium.

Joint-2nd prize was awarded to 13 year old Sabina Dazhaeva from Russia, 11 year old Jana Jakovljević from Serbia, 12 year old Hina Khuong-Huu from Japan and 12 year old Theodore Kim from Belgium.

 

15 year old Georgii Moroz from Ukraine and 14 year old Pal Laszlo Szomora from Hungary were awarded joint-1st prize in the 17 years and younger category at the 2017 Grumiaux International Violin Competition, in Brussels, Belgium.

Joint-2nd prize was awarded to 16 year old Nilufer Sude Guclu from Turkey and 16 year old Gaia Trionfera from Italy.

 

17 year old Arthur Decaris from France and 20 year old Judyta Kluza from Poland were awarded 2nd and 3rd prizes in the 21 years and under category at the 2017 Grumiaux International Violin Competition, in Brussels, Belgium.

No 1st prize was awarded in this year’s 21 years and under category.

 

20 year old Luka Ljubas from Croatia was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 11th Vaclav Huml International Violin Competition, in Zagreb, Croatia.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Leonid Zhelezny from Russia and Anne Marie Wehrmeyer from Germany.

4th, 5th and 6th prizes were awarded to Katarina Kutnar from Croatia, Una Stanić from Croatia and Eimi Wakui from Japan.

 

25 year old Persian-Austrian cellist VC Artist Kian Soltani was awarded the highly coveted 2017 ‘Credit Suisse Young Artist Award‘, in Vienna, Austria.

 

VC Young Artist cellist Zlatomir Fung, pianist Do-Hyun Kim, accordionist Hanzhi Wang, and the Omer String Quartet were each awarded a 1st prize at the 2017 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, in New York City.

 

VC Rising Star cellist Zlatomir Fung, cellist Thomas Mesa, harpist Rachel Lee Hall, flutist Beomjae Kim, trombonist Brittany Lasch and pianist Ronaldo Rolim were each awarded a 1st prize at the 2017 Astral Artists National Auditions, in Philadelphia.

 

The Argus Quartet and pianist Dominic Cheli was awarded joint-1st prize at the 2017 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, in New York.

 

17 year old VC Young Artist Anne Luisa Kramb, from Germany, was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 2nd Manhattan International Music Competition, in New York.

 

22 year old VC Young Artist Sirena Huang from the United States was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 New York Concert Artists Worldwide Debut Auditions in New York City.

 

VC Artists, violinist Paul Huang and the Calidore String Quartet were announced as two of twelve recipients of the prestigious 2017 Lincoln Center Awards for Emerging Artists.

 

The British Broadcasting Corporation announced 7 new additions to the ‘BBC New Generation Artists’ roster – including Ukrainian violinist Aleksey Semenenko, the French-based Quatuor Arod and jazz bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado.

 

59 year old Danish composer Bent Sørensen has been announced as the 2018 recipient of the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition – for his violin, cello and piano triple concerto, ‘L’isola della Città’.

 

Britain’s Royal Philharmonic Society announced Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons as their annual Gold Medal recipient.

 

32 year old Russian-born Dutch violinist Maria Milstein was awarded the 2018 Dutch Music Prize – the highest honour offered by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to a classical musician.

 

German violin virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter was announced as one of three recipients of an annual Bavarian State Foundation cultural award – honoring outstanding artistic and philanthropic activity.

 

British violinist Daniel Hope was awarded a ‘Federal Cross’ Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany – for his work as a cultural ambassador for the country.

 

25 year old British conductor Kerem Hasan was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 Nestle and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Competition, in Salzburg, Austria.

 

Canadian violinist Marc Djokic was awarded Canada’s 2nd biennial Prix Goyer classical music prize.

 

17 year old Australian violinist Yebin Yoo was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 Australian National Youth Concerto Competition – in Brisbane, Australia.

 

22 year old Australian-violinist Riley Skevington was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 Australian Kendall National Violin Competitionin Kendall, Australia.

 

Violinists Alexandra Lomeiko, Yume Fujise and Maria Kouznetsova, violist Alexander MacFarlane and cellist Jamal Aliyev were each awarded 2017 Hattori Foundation for Music and the Arts Senior Award bursaries.

 

The Sarasota Orchestra, in Florida, USA was awarded a US $10,000 grant from the American National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). 

 

Tarisio Fine Instruments & Bows announced 5 recipients of 2017 Tarisio Trust Young Artist Grants

  • Jocelyn Zhu and Mariella Haubs to be used for their project ‘Concerts for Compassion’ – a new concert series dedicated to the music of artists who have faced adversity in their lives.
  • Francisco Vila to be used for his ‘International Music Festival of Esmeralda’ project – a new festival that will allow 32 young South American artists the opportunity to work with members of the Juilliard String Quartet.

American musicologist Richard Taruskin, author of the acclaimed ‘Oxford History of Western Music’, was awarded the prestigious 2017 ¥50 Million (US $450,000) Japanese ‘Kyoto Prize’.

 

British cellist Steven Isserlis was awarded the 14th annual Glashütte Original Music Festival Award – in recognition of his ‘achievements in classical music education and support for young artists’.

 

91 year old Hungarian composer Gyorgy Kurtag and his wife, pianist Márta Kurtág were announced as the recipients of the 2017 £30,000 (US $37,500) Borletti-Buitoni Trust prizes – in recognition of their distinguished contribution to the world of music. 

 

Scottish violin virtuoso Nicola Benedetti was awarded the 2017 Queens Medal for Music – presented to an outstanding British musician or group of musicians who have had ‘major influence on the musical life of the nation’.

 

Moldovian-born Austrian violin virtuoso Patricia Kopatchinskaja was one of 15 recipients of the 2017 Swiss Grand Prix Music Prizes – in recognition for her contributions in all musical genres.

 

The Sphinx Organization, a US non-profit organization dedicated to the development of young American Black and Latin classical musicians, announced 15 recipients of 2017 MPower Artist Career Grants.

  • Matthew David Adams – $1,000 – to attend the Aspen Music Festival.
  • Steven Baloue – $9,500 – to purchase a viola by Michael Becker.
  • Jonathan Colbert – $38,650 – to purchase a double bass made by Trevor Davis.
  • Annalise Cole – $1,870 – to take private violin lessons with a master-level teacher at the Arts and Community Network.
  • Megan Delatour – $1,200 – to purchase a viola bow from Judd Violins.
  • Anita Dumar – $1,100 – to assist with sending the Ivalas Quartet to participate in the Anchorage Chamber Music Festival.
  • Angelica Durrell – $14,500 – to present a large-scale Cultural Crossover Concert featuring Afro-Caribbean music and an Integrated Orchestra.
  • David France – $4,930 – to support the Dare to Aspire Conference dedicated to equipping string teachers to bring about social change.
  • Celia Hatton – $2,300 – to participate in the Sarasota Music Festival.
  • Chi-chi Nwanoku – $24,500 – to produce Chineke! Orchestra and Chineke! Junior Orchestra performances at Royal Festival Hall, London.
  • Aaron Olguin – $16,500 – to embark on a five-venue chamber music tour with the Bassinova Quartet.
  • Maurice Todd – $30,000 – to create the Cincinnati Double Bass Institute.
  • Hannah White – $14,500 – to support costs associated with college preparation, including lessons, recordings, auditions, and competitions
  • Elena Urioste & Melissa White – $24,500 – to fund the launch of a new program celebrating the symbiosis between music and yoga.

 

London Symphony Orchestra Sub-Leader Lennox Mackenzie was announced as the Royal Philharmonic Society/Association of British Orchestras’ 2017 ‘Salomon Prize’ recipient.

 

British cellist Steven Isserlis was awarded the 2017 Wigmore Medal – in recognition of his long-standing relationship with London’s Wigmore Hall.

 

Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons was announced as the recipient of the prestigious 2018 Leonie Sonning Music Foundation Prize.

 

26 year old Swiss-born violist Hana Hobiger was announced as 1 of 3 recipients of the 2017 Fritz Gerber Contemporary Music Prizes.

 

23 year old Azerbaijani cellist Jamal Aliyev was awarded 1st prize at the 2017 Company Prince’s Prize Competition – hosted by the Guildhall School of Music, in London.

 

British cellist Steven Isserlis was awarded the €25,000 2017 ‘Glashütte Original Music Festival Award’.

 

Chinese violin maker Yu Hiudong was awarded a gold medal in the violin category at the 2017 Malta International Violin Making Competition – at the Central Academy of Arts, in Valletta, Malta.

Silver medals were presented to instrument makers Paolo Trazzi from Italy and Chen Xiang Wei from China.

In the viola category, a gold medal was awarded to Italian instrument maker Marco Osio.

Silver medals were presented to Han Zhaosheng of China and Seung Jin Lee from South Korea.

 

87 year old Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink was appointed a ‘Commander of the Order of the Netherlands’ –  the country’s oldest and most distinguished civil order.

 

German violinist David Garrett was awarded the annual 2017 €15,000 Frankfurt Music Prize.

 

Celebrated Russian contemporary music composer Sofia Gubaidulina was awarded one of six 2017 ’BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge’ Prizes in Madrid, Spain.

 

German violin virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter was awarded a 2017 ‘Crystal Award’ by the World Economic Forum – for her services to ‘music education’ and ‘young artists’ – and for having ‘shown exemplary commitment to improving the state of the world’.

 

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center announced Welsh-born composer and pianist Huw Watkins as the recipient of the 2017 $25,000 Elise L. Stoeger Prize.

 

24 year old VC cellist VC Artist Kian Soltani was awarded the prestigious 2017 ‘Leonard Bernstein’ prize for ‘outstanding musical artistry’.

 

London Symphony Orchestra sub-leader, violinist Lennox Mackenzie was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) – for his services to music.

 

German violinist and pianist Julia Fischer was awarded a ‘Federal Cross’ Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany – for her work as a cultural ambassador for the country.
