VC Artist SUUVI Performs New Arrangement of Chopin’s “Nocturne”
The Cuban-Chinese cellist has filmed a new video featuring her and pianist and composer Pedro Osuna’s arrangement of “Nocturne”
Now known professionally as SUUVI, the VC Artist cellist formerly known as Sophia Bacelar combines her background as a classically trained cellist with a passion for technology, innovation, and storytelling.
She has performed at Carnegie Hall, La Fondation Louis Vuitton, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA NY), The Fashion Institute of Technology, Lincoln Center, The Tel Aviv Museum of Art, The Berliner Philharmonie, Alice Tully Hall, Le Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, The Tonhalle Zürich, among others.
In 2019, she was awarded a Celia Ascher Fellowship to Juilliard’s Artist Diploma program, where she studied cello and acting, and Columbia University, where she studied film. She graduated in 2021 after being awarded the Leo B. Ruiz Prize and three career development grants.
Directed and produced by SUUVI, her latest video showcases Chopin’s “Nocturne,” which she arranged with pianist Pedro Osuna.
“The word ‘Nocturne’ typically evokes images of nighttime," SUUVI told The Violin Channel. "When conceptualizing this video, I knew that I wanted to focus not only on the ‘nocturnal’ aspect of the piece but also celebrate what comes after those moments of darkness.”
“As someone who has lived through a great deal of pain and sorrow but always maintained hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel, it is important for me always to show both sides of that reality,” SUUVI continued. “We shot the outdoor sequences on El Matador Beach at dawn as the sun rose and the playing shots at night in L.A. Dance Project's studios in Los Angeles’ Arts District. The solitude in both locations reflects the intimacy of being with oneself and facing one’s innermost thoughts, something increasingly rare and valuable in today’s world.”
