VC GIVEAWAY | Win 1 of 5 Signed Copies of Grammy Winner Jennifer Koh's "Alone Together" CD

 

The Violin Channel, in conjunction with Cedille Records, is this week giving away five personally autographed copies of Korean-American violinist Jennifer Koh's new CD: "Alone Together" — which just won a 2022 Grammy Award for 'Best Instrumental Solo'.

Amidst the pandemic's devastating effects on the music industry, Koh began her own project, inviting friends and colleagues to write new music for solo violin.

In addition to collaborating with colleagues who donated their pieces, such as Tania León, Vijay Iyer, Missy Mazzoli, Morgan Guerin, and Nina C. Young, Koh had these artists nominate emerging composers to write for the album. Cassie Wieland and Angélica Negrón were among those nominated and received micro-commissions from Koh's foundation, ARCO Collaborative.

The album itself represents the world premiere of all 39 under-five-minute pieces and is accompanied by a booklet with explanations of each work. Composer Missy Mazzoli stated that the project is “a snapshot not just of the pandemic, but of the musical community right now ... all the creativity happening.

“It's not all darkness and gloom and doom and horrors, but there's something really beautiful about everyone coming together in this one way,” she said. “And Jenny is just a genius at making those projects happen.”

“It was one of the most beautiful experiences I've had, to be honest, to see how much my community cared about each other, and also about the younger generation and about the art form itself,” said Koh.

The album also includes composers Wang Lu, Joungbum Lee, Sarah Gibson, Morgan Guerin, Darian Donovan Thomas, Tonia Ko, Thomas Kotcheff, Adeliia Faizullina, Jen Shyu, Inti Figgis-Vizueta, Ellen Reid, Rajna Swaminathan, Anthony Cheung, Tomás Gueglio-Saccone, Anjna Swaminathan, Layale Chaker, David Serkin Ludwig, Elizabeth Younan, Rafiq Bhatia, Hanna Benn, Katherine Balch, Andrew Norman, Angélica Negrón, Caroline Davis, Nina Shekhar, Qasim Naqvi, Shayna Dunkelman, Du Yun, George Lewis, Lester St. Louis, Sugar Vendil, Patrick Castillo, Vincent Calianno, and Kati Agócs.

2. Employees of The Violin Channel or their family members or anyone else connected in any way with the competition or helping to set up the competition shall not be permitted to enter the competition.

4. The closing date for entry will be 11:59 PM April 19, 2022 (New York Time). After this date, no further entries to the competition will be permitted.
   

5. No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason.
   

6. All incomplete entries will be disregarded and not eligible for entry.

The promoter reserves the right to cancel or amend the competition and these terms and conditions without notice in the event of a catastrophe, war, civil or military disturbance, act of God or any actual or anticipated breach of any applicable law or regulation or any other event outside of the promoter’s control. Any changes to the competition will be notified to entrants as soon as possible by the promoter.
   

8. The promoter is not responsible for inaccurate prize details supplied to any entrant by any third party connected with this competition.
   

9. No cash alternative to the prizes will be offered. The prizes are not transferable. Prizes are subject to availability and we reserve the right to substitute any prize with another of equivalent value without giving notice.
   

10. Winners will be chosen at random using randomization software.
    

11. The winner will be notified by email within 7 days of the closing date. If the winner cannot be contacted or does not claim the prize within 14 days of notification, we reserve the right to withdraw the prize from the winner and pick a replacement winner.
    

12. The promoter’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
