VC Artist SUUVI's "SWAN" from the New EP
SUUVI's new disc re-imagines iconic works for the cello within a soundworld of synths and electronic sound design
Now known professionally as SUUVI, the VC Artist and cellist formerly known as Sophia Bacelar combines her background as a classically trained cellist with a passion for technology, innovation, and storytelling.
SUUVI has recently released her debut EP. Titled TRANSITION, the disc features a collection of five iconic works for cello that SUUVI has re-arranged for a new sound-world. She pairs her warm cello tone with synths and electronic sound design, presenting a new take on these familiar pieces.
The works on the disc are re-imaginings of one of Chopin's Nocturnes, Beethoven's "Moonlight" Sonata, Saint-Saëns's "The Swan", one of Satie's Gnossiennes, and Massenet's "Meditation". TRANSITION was recorded in collaboration with the pianist and composer Pedro Osuna.
For the Saint-Saëns track "SWAN", SUUVI has collaborated with the Dutch National Ballet and The Rogue Ballerina (aka Georgina Pazcoguin from New York City Ballet) to produce an accompanying music video, which you can view below.
SUUVI has performed at Carnegie Hall, La Fondation Louis Vuitton, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA NY), The Fashion Institute of Technology, Lincoln Center, The Tel Aviv Museum of Art, The Berliner Philharmonie, Alice Tully Hall, Le Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and the Tonhalle Zürich, among others.
In 2019, she was awarded a Celia Ascher Fellowship to Juilliard’s Artist Diploma program, where she studied cello and acting, and Columbia University, where she studied film. She graduated in 2021 after being awarded the Leo B. Ruiz Prize and three career development grants.
