Tanglewood Music Festival Announces 2022 Season

To involve eight weekends of concerts with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), the 2022 Tanglewood Music Festival will also see the grand reopening of performance spaces Ozawa Hall and Linde Center.

The 2020 season had to be canceled due to the pandemic and last year’s schedule was shortened.

This year’s festival will host eight world and American premieres, 28 works by living composers, plus 21 artists who will make their Tanglewood or BSO debuts.

BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons will be leading nine programs including the BSO’s opening week of performances on July 8-10, featuring Bernstein’s Symphony No. 2 with piano soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

BSO’s summer home since 1937, Tanglewood also features national artists and a diverse program of conductors, performers, and composers.

This season will see the Boston Pops Orchestra (BPO) performing live with conductor Keith Lockhart alongside a screening of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and in a Sondheim tribute with a Broadway cast to celebrate the late American composer’s work.

Grammy Award-winning ensemble Silkroad led by Artistic Director Rhiannon Giddens will showcase four new commissions by Silkroad’s artists. Musical icons such as Ringo Starr, Bonnie Raitt, and James Taylor, will also perform.

“The 2022 Tanglewood season is filled with so many wonderful styles of composition, performed by the most extraordinary musicians working today, among them our very own Boston Symphony Orchestra,” Nelsons said in a statement in the Boston Herald

Certain health and safety guidelines for the performances will be clarified closer to the beginning of the season. Tickets to the event start at $15 and will go on general sale on March 10 at 10 AM EST.
