Spain’s Barcelona Symphony Orchestra Appoints Associate Conductor

Austrian-Spanish conductor Teresa Riveiro Böhm will join the orchestra in their 2022/23 concert season

As the new associate conductor, Teresa Riveiro Böhm will assist the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra’s (OBC) resident conductor Ludovic Morlot, and will attend the ensemble’s many rehearsals, concerts, and recording sessions.

Böhm conducted OBC for the first time recently in a concert celebrating Barcelona’s annual La Mercè festival — with a program including Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, and Joan Lamote de Grignon’s Scherzo Based on a Popular Tune.

Her new position with OBC also coincides with her appointment as associate conductor of the Welsh National Opera. In previous years, Böhm has been a Leverhulme Conducting Fellow of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood Conducting Fellow, and Neeme-Järvi-Prize recipient. She is also a first-prize winner of Vienna’s Dichler Wettbewerb Competition and recipient of the first orchestra prize from the Savaria Symphony Orchestra.

Her 2021/22 season engagements included conducting the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, Robert Schumann Philharmonie, Kremerata Baltica at the Kronberg Academy Festival, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre national de Metz, Stuttgart Philharmonic, Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier, and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

“It is a great pleasure for me, and a great responsibility, to have been appointed associate conductor of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra,” Böhm. “I am very grateful for this splendid opportunity, offered to me by the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and resident conductor Ludovic Morlot!”

A graduate of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW) and Cologne’s Hochschule für Musik und Tanz studying with Johannes Wildner, Alexander Rumpf, and Stephan E. Wehr, she received her first violin lessons at age five and studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory’s Central Music School.

She is currently completing a specialized master’s degree in conducting at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) under the guidance of Johannes Schlaefli.
