Prizes Awarded at Norway’s Princess Astrid Violin Competition
22 year old violinist Mayumi Kanagawa was been awarded 1st prize at the 2016 18th Princess Astrid International Music Competition, in Norway
22 year old Japanese-American violinist Mayumi Kanagawa was been awarded 1st prize at the 2016 18th Princess Astrid International Music Competition, in Trondheim, Norway.
A student of Kolja Blacher at Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin, Mayumi will receive 160000 NOK (US $19,000) and a number of important European debuts - including a solo engagement with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra.
2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 17 year old violinist Ludvig Gudim from Norway and 27 year old violinist VC Young Artist Suyeon Kang from Australia.
This year’s jury comprised: Elisa Batnes (Chair), Ulf Wallin, Rainer Kuchl, Sten Cranner, Mariann Thorsen, Gilbert Varga and Jennifer Spencer.
The competition has been held biennially since 1953 with the support of the Norwegian Department of Culture.
This year’s competition was open solely to violinists under the age of 30.
