Paris's Centre Pompidou to Close for €420 Million Renovation Project
However, IRCAM, the Centre Pompidou's acoustics and contemporary music research facility, will remain open and operational throughout the renovation process
The Centre Pompidou in Paris will close for a large renovation project between 2025 and 2030, with projected costs totaling €420 million. The project will see the complex expand into 20,000 square meters of space which was previously occupied by bus parks, which will allow the Pompidou to host two large cinemas, multidisciplinary exhibitions, and contemporary creation sections.
One component of the Centre Pompidou is IRCAM, a research institute focusing on music and acoustics — especially avant-garde and electro-acoustic music. The institute has supported composers such as Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, and Kaija Saariaho, and it also plays host to Ensemble Intercontemporain.
It has been announced that IRCAM will remain open during the refurbishment and that there will be no disruption or redundancies for its staff of 160.
Other organizations in the Centre Pompidou complex include the Bibliothèque publique d'information (a large public library) and the Musée National d'Art Moderne, which is Europe's largest contemporary art museum.
A competition will be held to determine which architect gets to design the Centre Pompidou's renovations.
