Naxos Records has announced the release of British violinist Madeleine Mitchell's new album: Grace Williams Chamber Music.
Recorded with the players of the London Chamber Ensemble, the disc features notable Welsh composer Grace Williams' (1906-1977) Violin Sonata, Sextet for Oboe, Trumpet & Piano Quartet, Suite for 9 Instruments, Romanza, Sarabande for Piano Left Hand - and Rondo for Dancing.
"I was in Cardiff visiting the Wales Music Information Centre looking at violin repertoire by Welsh composers and the manuscript of Grace Williams Violin Sonata of 1930 caught my eye ..." Madeleine has told The Violin Channel.
"Through research and manuscripts at the National Library of Wales I discovered a major Sextet, Suite for Nine Instruments and a few shorter pieces .... spanning Grace Williams’ life as a composer 1930-70 ..." she has said.
"I hope listeners will find the music interesting and worthwhile ... Grace Williams has a strong personal voice showing some influence of both her teacher, Vaughan Williams and perhaps Bartok and Shostakovitch ... and similarities with her close friend Britten."
