Evil Penguin Classics has announced the release of Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey's new double CD set: 'Schubert & Brahms: The Complete Duos'
Evil Penguin Classics has this month announced the release of Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey's new double CD set: Schubert & Brahms: The Complete Duos.
Recorded with Dutch pianist Paolo Giacometti, the disc features cello and piano arrangements of Brahms' 1st and 3rd Violin Sonatas - coupled with Schubert's Arpeggione Cello Sonata and cello and piano arrangements of Schubert's Sonatina in D Major and Scherzo in C Minor from the FAE Sonata.
''This double disc release is the culmination of the Schubert-Brahms project - and includes our third recording of the Schubert Arpeggione Sonata and our first ever confrontation with the Brahms FAE Scherzo and the last violin sonata ..." Pieter has told The Violin Channel.
"On top of that, after three recordings of the first Brahms Violin Sonata in the transposed key of D-Major, I finally played it in the original key of G-Major, which was a revelation ... I can’t believe I haven’t done it before and that I have never heard anybody else do it ... " he has said.
"Recording the Brahms 3rd Violin Sonata turned out to be fantastically rewarding ... playing that formidable baritone melody in the slow movement alone justifies the whole project ... and then that outrageous energy of the early FAE Scherzo ... irresistible, inspirational stuff!”
