The Houston Symphony, in Houston, United States has today announced the layoff of 21 full-time and part-time staff members – due to the ongoing economic effects of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The ensemble has estimated a loss of around $8 million in ticket revenue for 2019-2020 - and a projected loss of $11 million for the 2020-2021 season.
“These figures reflect 219 canceled events due to COVID-19 in the 2019-2020 season, the impact of COVID-19 on Houston’s economy, and a projected reduction of sales capacity due to audience social distancing in the 2020-2021 season," a spokesperson for the ensemble has today said.
