Five Artists Awarded 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grants — Including VC Young Artists Geneva Lewis & Kevin Zhu
In addition to violinists Geneva Lewis and Kevin Zhu, grant winners include cellists Sterling Elliot and Oliver Herbert, along with pianist Eric Lu
Awarded annually, each artist will take home $25,000 to be used for the advancement of their careers.
The virtual award ceremony will be streamed at 7 pm EST via WQXR/ Jerome L. Greene Performance Space on The Violin Channel's Facebook page.
Geneva Lewis, 22, was the winner of the Concert Artist Guild's 2020 Victor Elmaleh Competition. She currently studies at the New England Conservatory as a student of Miriam Fried.
Kevin Zhu, 18, is the former first prize winner of the Paganini International Violin Competition and currently studies at The Juilliard School as a student of Itzhak Perlman and Li Lin.
Sterling Elliot, 21, previously won first prize of the Senior Division at the Sphinx Competition. He currently studies at The Juilliard School as a student of Joel Krosnick.
Oliver Herbert, 23, was the winner of the XI Witold Lutoslawski Competition. He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music where he studied with Carter Brey and Peter Wiley.
Eric Lu, 23, is the former gold medalist of the Leeds International Piano Competition. He currently studies at the Curtis Institute of Music with Jonathan Biss and Robert McDonald.
Since 1976, more than 125 talented young musicians have been recognized with Avery Fisher Career Grant Awards. The distinguished list includes: Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Joshua Bell, Sarah Chang, Leila Josefowicz and Alisa Weilerstein along with VC Artists the Dover Quartet, Stephen Waarts, Stefan Jackiw, Augustin Hadelich, Tessa Lark, Benjamin Beilman, Francisco Fullana, Angelo Xiang Yu, Matthew Lipman, Zlatomir Fung, Richard Lin, Stella Chen, and Paul Huang.
