British conductor and cellist Sir John Barbirolli died on this day in 1970, aged 70.
Remembered as one of the finest conductors of the 20th century, Barbirolli served principal conducting positions with The Hallé Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, and Vienna Philharmonic.
