Conductor Alpesh Chauhan Renews Contract at Düsseldorfer Symphoniker
Chauhan will add three seasons to his tenure, continuing with the orchestra until 2027
The British conductor Alpesh Chauhan has renewed his contract as Principal Guest Conductor of the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker and will remain in the post until 2027. He made his debut with the ensemble in 2018, in a performance of Bruckner's Symphony No. 4.
In the present season, Chauhan makes his debut with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in two contrasting programs, returns to Düsseldorf for Prokofiev and Schumann, and leads Keith Warner’s production of Michael Tippett’s New Year with the Birmingham Opera Company.
Hailing originally from Birmingham, Chauhan studied the cello with Eduardo Vassallo at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. At the same institution, he completed a master’s degree in conducting, studying with Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. During this time, he was mentored by Andris Nelsons and Edward Gardner in his post as Assistant Conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 2014 to 2016.
Following his debut in 2015, Chauhan was appointed Principal Conductor of the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini in Parma and performed and recorded much of the great symphonic repertoire, including a complete cycle of Brahms’ symphonies.
"I am thrilled to continue my relationship with Düsseldorfer Symphoniker as Principal Guest Conductor in the years to come!" Chauhan said. "We have already shared some wonderful experiences together, performing symphonic heavyweights as well as lesser-known masterworks – with some fabulous soloist collaborations too. I love the commitment, dedication and vitality that the fantastic musicians in Düsseldorf bring – always ready to explore and rediscover a wide range of repertoire – also alongside our esteemed colleague and Principal Conductor, Adam Fischer."
"We feel so supported by the enthusiasm of our loyal audience: I take great pride in seeing how this is developing and broadening in diverse communities. It’s also inspiring bringing new commissions to life – also within our ’Green Monday’ series – themed around the important subject of climate change, as well as symphonic favourites – recently with Shostakovich, Bruckner, Schumann and Rachmaninoff."
"I look forward to more years of great music-making together!"
