Ondine Records has this month announced the release of American cellist Wilhelmina Smith's new CD: Esa-Pekka Salonen & Kaija Saariaho: Works for Solo Cello.

The disc features Finnish composer Esa-Pekka Salonen's (b. 1958) Yta III for Cello, Knock, Breathe, Shine and Sarabande per un coyote, Giuseppe Colombi's 'Ciaccona a basso solo' - and Kaija Saariaho's (b.1952) 'Dreaming Chaconne, Petals, Sept Papillons and Spins and Spells.

'I’ve been drawn to Esa-Pekka’s music since I first learned his “Mania,” ... the technical demands of which he once described as "juggling chainsaws” ..." Wilhelmina has told The Violin Channel.

"His solo works here transcend mere technical boundary-breaking ... they are infused with humor, character, virtuosity, and spirituality ... and Kaija’s music, with it’s sheer beauty, inventiveness, and other-worldliness I find intriguing and tantalizing," the former Leonard Rose international Cello Competition prize winner has said.
