Carnegie Hall Announces 2023/24 Season

The new season involves over 150 concerts by world-leading artists and ensembles, plus educational and social impact programs

Based in New York City, Carnegie Hall’s 2023/24 concert season will kick off with its Opening Night Gala on October 4, 2023, featuring violinist Leonidas Kavakos with conductor Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, paired with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

Later in October, the Sphinx Virtuosi will make their annual Carnegie Hall appearance featuring bassist and VC Young Artist Xavier Foley in the New York premiere of his own Concertante for Two Double Bass Soloists with String Orchestra with bassist Kebra Seyoun-Charles

In November, the Kronos Quartet will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a unique concert featuring Laurie Anderson, Jake Blount, Brian Carpenter, Wu Man, Tanya Tagaq, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Sō Percussion, plus VC Artists Aizuri Quartet and Attacca Quartet. December 2023 will see the New York String Orchestra perform, as well as The English Concert return for their multi-year Handel project at Carnegie Hall.

As the centerpiece of the upcoming season, Carnegie Hall’s next citywide festival, Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice will be presented from January through May 2024 with cultural partners across NYC. The festival will explore Germany’s tumultuous Weimar Republic of 1919–1933 and the arts and culture that emerged and continue to persevere during an increasingly traumatic period in history.

“As we look ahead to the 2023–2024 season, we are particularly excited to embark on our festival exploration of the Weimar era, a complex time when the world was in upheaval, but also a period of bold and innovative creative expression, and one that has many lessons that resonate today,” said Carnegie Hall’s executive and artistic director, Clive Gillinson.

Other highlights include pianist Mitsuko Uchida and conductor Franz Welser-Möst’s curation of two Perspectives series, which will feature the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and performances of Schubert’s music with tenor Mark Padmore and pianist Jonathan Biss. The Cleveland Orchestra and Vienna Philharmonic will also appear in the series in January and March 2024, respectively.

The season-long residency position of Pulitzer Prize-winner Tania León as Carnegie Hall’s Debs Composer’s Chair will see her curate concerts and include the New York premiere of a new work performed by Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, plus the world premiere of newly commissioned music by Nathalie Joachim. Two free performances include the Harlem Chamber Players and the JACK Quartet.

In February 2024, composer John Williams will conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra in his own Cello Concerto, played by Yo-Yo Ma, plus selections from his iconic film scores. Also in February, VC Artist Pablo Ferrández will appear in recital with pianist Julio Elizalde

“With our season at Carnegie Hall now fully back, it’s been thrilling to connect with concertgoers and experience a wide range of live music making with fellow music lovers,” Gillinson continued. “We are inspired by the incredible line-up of artists and ensembles who will be with us, above all, our Perspectives and Debs artists who have created exceptional series especially for Carnegie Hall audiences.”

Klaus Mäkelä and Jakub Hrůša will make their Carnegie Hall debuts with the Orchestre de Paris and the Bamberg Symphony, respectively.

In March 2024, Jazz pianist Jason Moran will present his acclaimed meditation on the life and legacy of James Reese Europe, who created the band of WWI’s African American 369th infantry regiment and helped popularize jazz across France. Other jazz performances include Kenny Barron, jazz vocalist Kandace Springs, and GRAMMY Award-winning drummer and composer Antonio Sánchez.

The season’s chamber music highlights include the Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble and performances from Germany’s Kronberg Academy with violist Tabea Zimmermann; the Belcea, Quatuor Ébène, and Danish String Quartets, plus VC Artist Dover Quartet.

“Throughout the entire season, the great musicians featured on our stages have created so many thought-provoking programs — from early to new music and across many different genres,” Gillinson added. “We look forward to sharing the best of music with everyone.”
