Applications Closing for ISANGYUN Competition — Violin Edition 2024
Applications for this year's edition must be received by July 31, 2024
The ISANGYUN Competition is held in remembrance of Korean composer Isang Yun (1917-1995) and aims to support talented young musicians from around the world. The Competition is held alternately in three disciplines — Violin, Cello, and Piano.
This year’s Violin edition will take place from November 2 —10 in the Tongyeong Concert Hall in South Korea.
Open to violinists of all nationalities, born between November 1, 1994, and October 31, 2009, applicants must submit an online application by July 31, 2024.
For the Preliminary Round, applicants must submit the video recordings of the first movement of a W. A. Mozart violin concerto with Cadenza (K.207, K.211, K.216, K.218, or K.219) in addition to work(s) of the applicant’s choice within the time limit.
The jury includes Mihaela Martin (Chairperson), Christian Altenburger, Martin Beaver, Michiko Kamiya, Ida Kavafian, Hyuna Kim, Sung-Ju Lee, Douglas Sheldon, and Weidong Tong.
Prizes include:
- First Prize — KRW 30,000,000 (~21,500 USD)
- Second Prize — KRW 20,000,000 (~14,300 USD)
- Third Prize — KRW 10,000,000(~7,100 USD)
- Fourth Prize — KRW 5,000,000(~$3,500 USD)
- Isang Yun Special Prize — KRW 10,000,000 (~7,100 USD) for the best interpretation of the work “Violin Concerto No. 3” (1992)
- Seong-Yawng Park Special Prize — KRW 2,000,000 (~1,400 USD) for an exceptionally talented young Korean participant.
- UNESCO City of Music Special Prize — KRW 2,000,000 (~1,400 USD) which is an audience award. The participant with the majority of votes will receive this award.
The First Prize winner will be given the opportunity to perform at the 'Orchestra Festival' hosted by the Seoul Arts Center, ‘Music in PyeongChang’ hosted by the Gangwon Art & Culture Foundation, and the ‘DMZ OPEN Festival hosted by the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization. Winners will be given opportunities to perform with the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra.
