New York Philharmonic Awards $200,000 New Music Prize

Dutch composer Louis Andriessen has been announced as the winner of the 2016 New York Philharmonic Marie-Josée Kravis New Music Prize

Dutch composer Louis Andriessen has been announced as the winner of the 2016 New York Philharmonic Marie-Josée Kravis New Music Prize.

The 77 year old Amsterdam-based composer will receive US $200,000 - and a commission to write a new symphonic work for the Philharmonic’s 2018-19 season.

“We are not important … the music is important … and we have the duty to write as well as we can …. it is in this spirit that I will write for the New York Philharmonic… ” he has said.

Mr. Andriessen current serves on faculty at The Royal Conservatory of The Hague and was also awarded the prestigious 2011 Grawemeyer Composition Award - for his multimedia opera “La Commedia”.

The decision was made by a selection committee that included New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert and Composer-In-Residence Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Previous Marie-Josée Kravis New Music Prize recipients include Henri Dutilleux and Per Norgard.
