New York Philharmonic to Return to Carnegie Hall in 2022

After an absence of almost seven years, the New York Philharmonic will return to Carnegie Hall for four performances in 2022

The first performance takes place on January 6, when Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki will make her Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage debut. She will conduct Adolphus Hailstork’s An American Port of Call, Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5, and John Adams’s Saxophone Concerto, with soloist Branford Marsalis.

The three other performances will all be led by the orchestra's Music Director Jaap van Zweden. On April 27, van Zweden and the orchestra will give the American premiere of Nico Muhly's work "In Certain Circles," featuring pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque. The program will also include two works by Debussy, "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" and "La Mer," and will conclude with the "Liebestod" from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde.

The concert on May 6 includes Igor Levit as featured soloist in Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1, and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra in the second half. The orchestra will round out their set of four performances on June 10 with the world premiere of Sarah Kirkland Snider’s piece "Forward Into Light," Barber’s Violin Concerto with soloist Hilary Hahn, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.
