VC Artist Stella Chen to Perform in her New York Philharmonic Debut

The Lunar New Year Concert and Gala is an annual New York Philharmonic tradition that began in 2012.

This year, conductor Earl Lee will also debut with the orchestra, leading a program that includes Li Huanzhi’s "Spring Festival Overture," Bizet’s "Carmen Fantasie" and Ma Sicong’s "Nostalgia" with violinist VC Artist Stella Chen as the soloist.

"It’s a privilege and pleasure to be making my debut with Maestro Lee and the NY Philharmonic for their Lunar New Year gala," Stella told The Violin Channel. "Growing up, the new year was always a reason for optimism, renewed drive, enthusiasm, and generosity- some of the most beautiful qualities of human nature that make celebrations like this possible. I’m honored to be a part of this joyous occasion in New York, my second home."

The concert will also include Berlioz’s "Le Corsaire" Overture, Dvořák’s "Song to the Moon from Rusalka," Dukas’s "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice," and Tu-nam Cho’s "The Bird Song" with soprano Hera Hyesang Park.

There will be a pre-concert reception from in the Och Foyer, the concert at 7:30 p.m., and a seated dinner with the artists in the Morgan Stanley Lobby immediately following the performance.

All attending audience members will be required to show proof that they have received a COVID-19 vaccine.

VC Artist Stella Chen is a graduate of The Juilliard School, Harvard University, and New England Conservatory, and a former prize winner at the Tibor Varga and Menuhin International Violin Competitions.

In 2019, she was awarded first prize at the 2019 Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition, in Brussels, and in 2020, she was a recipient of a 2020 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Prize and Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Stella will make her VC Vanguard debut in the upcoming season with violist VC Artist Matthew Lipman.
